Hair 101

We get a lot of questions about our hair – what we ask for when we get it cut, colored, where we go, and our favorite products. So for today’s post…Hair 101.

Cut
– My hairstylist does soft layers around my face and does a long textured cut in the back. I used to get layers in the back but my hair is so thick, it made my hair look too poofy!

Color – I do all over balayage and partial highlights. I started doing balayage last year and I’m obsessed! There’s WAY less noticeable regrowth compared to doing foils. I’m bad about making it to the salon (I go probably twice a year) so this really works in my favor! If you’re blonde, I highly recommend going to a stylist who specializes in coloring blondes. If you’re in Dallas I recommend going to Mina or Ana at Muse The Salon – I love both of them!

Wash – One of the reasons I can go so long between coloring my hair is because I maintain it at home. Along with a purple shampoo, I use the Moroccanoil Color Continue shampoo and Color Continue conditioner. The two form a protective shield that minimizes color fading and locks your color in. And of course it makes your hair shinier, glossier, and the color more vibrant. I follow up with this Protect & Prevent spray which is basically like an SPF for your hair. If you put any heat on your hair you definitely need to be using this to avoid breakage.

Cut – When I get my hair cut, I ask for a texturized blunt cut with face-framing layers. This cut is blunt ends (texturized, so they aren’t just so blunt/straight) around my whole head, and a few layers around my face. I like to add layers around my face because I think it softens the look. You can see examples of blunt cuts here.

Color – I do a full head of balayage highlights. I get my hair colored two – three times/year. I ask for no brassy/warm tones, I prefer cooler looking colors on my hair since it pulls orange very easily. The thing I love about balayage is that it looks natural, and is placed away from the root, so you can go much longer between coloring appointments!

Wash – I wash my hair 1-2 times/week. My hair gets oily quick, so some weeks it’s more like 2-3 times depending on my schedule. When I asked on IG stories last month, this dry shampoo from Moroccanoil was the number one most recommended, so I quickly picked some up and love it! I love that it has the option for dark or light tones (since a lot of shampoos look way too white/gray in my hair). When I wash my hair I do a double, reverse wash. I start by conditioning my hair, then wash it twice. The double, reverse wash keeps my hair looking cleaner, longer. Last time I was getting my hair colored, I got yelled at because I wasn’t using a color safe shampoo & conditioner. Oops. Since then, I’ve been using the Color Continue Shampoo, Conditioner, and Protect and Prevent spray from Moroccanoil. I’ve always loved the original Moroccanoil (I’ve used this since high school!), and I love the Color Care line! If you color your hair in any way, you need to be using a color-safe shampoo & conditioner. With this line – every time you wash, COLORLINK™ technology continuously repairs both chemically and physically so that hair is better able to retain color (aka your hair color won’t fade after 3 washes!). I also just ordered this Clarifying shampoo because it’s formulated for oily scalps like mine! I will use this as part of my double wash once it gets here! Also looking at this Oily Scalp Treatment…think I need it, the reviews are great!

Big thanks to Moroccanoil for partnering on this post!
